RACHEL PICKERING

"I enjoy working in my home studio, embracing the freedom of no expectations while staying focused on my artistic journey. I love to explore with abandon the areas of light, translucency, depth, and colour."

Artist Bio

Rachel Pickering (born in 1973 in Sault Ste. Marie, ON) is an abstract artist based in Calgary, AB. She is an intuitive artist who enjoys delving into depth and harmony by layering colours translucently to visually convey and interpret emotions. Working primarily with fluid mixed media from her home studio, Lemontree Lane Art Studio (2Las), she is currently exploring and adapting concepts from post-war abstract expressionism (1945-1960), with a focus on the New York School and Color Field painting movements.
Rachel's creative work is deeply influenced by her upbringing along the North Shore of Lake Superior. She fondly recalls spending summers at camp and sailing with her parents across the Great Lakes. Even now, she continues the tradition by bringing her kids back each year to Horseshoe Bay, ON, to reconnect with family and friends. Her art is intricately connected to the natural beauty that surrounds Lake Superior – from the sculpted rock formations shaped by water to the serene glassy waters, the reflections of shorelines, the majestic ice formations in winter, and the powerful elements of thunderous clouds and fierce winds that define life by Lake Superior.
Rachel, as an artist, strives to discover and experiment with various creative techniques while staying faithful to her artistic path. She produces genuine and heartfelt pieces that confront the contrasts between simplicity and complexity, boldness and subtlety, aiming to achieve a harmonious balance. This allows her to present work that is remarkably dynamic in its simplicity.

Colour Field Explorations

I am currently taking inspiration from post-war abstract expressionists. I have been exploring the creation of colour field paintings, focusing on developing depth and harmony through the translucent layering of colour. In each piece, I strive to create an aura that is both visual and tactile while building illuminating layers of colour, texture, and movement.

"I love evolving and expanding as an artist, unravelling personal truths, understanding what defines my work, and exploring the meaningful reasons behind my creative pursuits; is truly a joy to discover because it is in these moments of exploration and self-discovery that we find the true essence of our art and the limitless potential that lies within us.”

My thoughts on my current work….

Each painting has developed from exploring colour field painting techniques and evolved from a combined practice of intuitive mixed-media watercolour and pouring techniques, which is the basis of most of my current work. As layers build, the individual character of each image begins to emerge. I start to use a more analytical approach to balance composition while carefully considering the spontaneity and life of the piece. These pieces aim to create luminosity and radiance without a defined focus to affect an expansive presence and intimacy between the viewer and the paintings.
